Children’s Program

Why we created this program

Intimate partner violence (IPV) can leave a lasting impact on the whole family. Since the early 1980s, when Interval House became Canada’s first shelter to develop and fund a Children’s Program, it has been an essential part of helping families heal and rebuild their lives after abuse. Focused on breaking the cycle of abuse through intervention and support, our approach is individualized — geared to the specific needs of each child.

There are resources available in the community for women who have experienced IPV and their children, but many of these programs have long waitlists. Our Children’s Program team assessed existing programs in the community to identify any gaps we could immediately address to ensure that families always have mental health and parenting supports uniquely suited to their needs.

After extensive research and evaluation, we’ve expanded our revitalized Children’s Program through the innovation of our new Mom and Me Group Counselling and our Peer Mentorship Program, which is currently under development.

About the new Children’s Programs

Mom and Me Group Counselling Program

Tailored to support family healing and rebuild healthy family bonds, Interval House’s Mom and Me Program will offer tools to support emotional regulation, safety, and healthy relationships.

Peer Mentorship Program

Our Peer Mentorship Program will create community ambassadors and leaders who can discuss their experience with IPV in the community.

Through the program, select former residents of Interval House will become inspirational role models for children and youth at the shelter. Leaders who have established healthy relationships and lifestyles will participate in the shelter’s child and youth psychoeducational programming to provide their unique perspectives.

Our Goals

By giving moms and their children the supports they need to strengthen family bonds and establish healthy relationships, we ultimately empower them to break the cycle of violence and create a brighter future.
