This article in The Star’s 1996 study of 133 cases of domestic violence examines cases among women who have immigrated to Canada.  For these women, the pressure of the law is magnified by the isolation that comes with living outside mainstream Canadian society, either because they don’t speak English or are unfamiliar with Canadian-style justice.
